It looks like I've been able to work round the problem by backing up the old build directory, recreating it with makedir, doing $ ../configure --disable-optimising $ make and *then* doing the $ make doc *before* attempting to do $ make check Doc build is currently chuntering through the French and Dutch versions of the web pictures as I type. Look like make check does something to fool make doc it has provided Documentation/out-www/version.dep when in fact it hasn't.
