I'm changing the title to reflect what is really going on here.
I consider this to be a Documentation issue. We need to make it clear that
that the properties of a beam are determined at the *start* of the beam,
and any changes in the middle of the beam will not take effect until the
*next* beam.
Keith's example could easily become a snippet. I'm not sure where it
should go. If there's agreement about this as a Documentation issue, I'll
look into it some more.
