It does not work reliably with \relative, and the total community interest to get this fixed amounts to an investment of €25 and no work. <URL:http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1110> The effort for a reasonably comprehensive solution modeled after the approach in the presented code sketch would be about 10 times that and require only a moderate level of skills. It is just boring and ugly grindwork nobody can be interested in.
