I did an infeasible amount of work comparing different approaches to getting an optimum image. I concluded that making texi2pdf force the images to 6" wide, and using the larger image produced by lily was the best approach. The real issue about this (if we wanted the pdf to look much better) is that using bitmapped images in PDF documents is not ideal - it would be much better to use lilypond book and to use .eps images. However, -book doesn't appear to have a -dpreview option. This would make a good enhancement.
