After fixing the regtest and proof-reading the patch, I committed
fb0b572f923f29e02bc9909a4cf5cc674e5315d5
As a side effect, the duplication of the garbage collection statistics
should be gone.
I don't guarantee that I caught everything, and that I have not made
mistakes. But the regtests are at least reassuring.
