These all appear to be the same issue to me. Is it possible to merge some of
the examples from the third issue into the first? I feel like the
tiny.examples in that one most clearly demonstrate the problem.

I don't know about the internals how ties work, but I second this: It
looks like ties in general should be forced to take up some horizontal
space in the first hand. I.e. Tie_engraver should only be able to draw a
tie when it can get enough room for it to show up. Otherwise it should
at least throw an error message (please together with the line number in
the .ly source).
If you merge this issue, it should at least get the priority medium (not
low like issue 298). As it "produces aesthetically poor output in a
situation which could be expected to crop up frequently in real-world
music" it might even get a "high" IMO.

Hi!
As I can see, these issues are the same very probably:
* http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=298
* http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=840
* http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1219
If yes, I would leave the first, marking others as duplicates.
Please, any thoughts?
