I see. I can only hope that this will change someday, then. Moving the Tie_engraver to Staff solved a problem very elegantly, the problem of having a set of notes with a cross-staff beam, all tied to a cross-staff chord. It was just as easy as making the same construct on a single staff - no hidden stuff and nothing that needed further workarounds for midi.
