Mike, was your patch in comment 3 a serious one? I'm not certain where we
stand on this particular issue... I suspect that various other changes
(especially Keith's work on 1472) may change this. And you're doing
fantastic work on issue 37 right now, so I don't want to distract you by
getting back into this issue.
I'm going to mark the patch "needs work" for now, and when other stuff
settles down, you can either revise the patch, or just put it on codereview.
