I have started looking into this.
This definitely was not an intentional change, but there seem to be
problems with
font lookups that only appear when compiling the regtests.
Reverting 28e1d83e5f24e8c5c1e8dca905ce2c31c5bca156 partially solves the
problem,
which is perplexing.
