New issue 994 by v.villenave: Enhancement: the ability to automatically beam across rests.
http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=994

As David noted in Issue 898:
"""
It would make sense to have an option to allow automatic beaming across
rests when a note instead of a rest would be beamed. With some syncopated
rhythms, this makes the structure better recognizable when notes are
interspersed with rests only semi-regularly.
"

Here's a more detailed example:

\relative c' {
% This is how it is
 c8 c r c c c c c |
% This is how it should (could) be
 c8[ c r c] c c c c |
}

This is a nice feature request, and I for one would be delighted to have it
(as an optional behavior, for continuity's sake). Count me in for €40.
