It seems to me that this probably is another incarnation of the bug
discussed in the
thread
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-devel/2007-04/msg00136.html,
which as far as I can see is missing in the bug tracker.
There are also close connections to

Just as we now have support to align Rehearsal marks and other objects
on different
anchor points it would be very nice to be able to align dynamics, lyrics
and probably several
other objects to the note heads of the current paper column (if there
are any).

Is this remaining part a regression? The problem is that the crescendo
has no notes
to attach to so it attaches to the PaperColumn (which includes
accidentals and
arpeggios). The more canonical way to put dynamics in parallel with
the music is to
include them in the same voice (ie. without the \\).
