I am completely baffled by this problem. I've checked all the
instances of the Verdana font I can find on my laptop, and they all
check out okay. Maybe there's another instance of the font somewhere
I can't find. I thought maybe the wrong version of GS was being
triggered, but running with --verbose shows that GPL Ghostscript SVN
PRE-RELEASE 8.56 (2006-05-20) is the version called. And when I tried
using ps2pdf directly to process the .ps file, it choked - "invalid
font in --glyphshow--".
Have you checked if ps2pdf calls the Ghostscript version included with
the
LilyPond distribution or any other Ghostscript version on your machine
(I don't know any details on how the LilyPond installation looks on a
Mac)?
Also, I hope you have made sure that you have not set any Ghostscript
related
environment variables, such as GS_LIB or GS_FONTPATH.

ps2pdf is calling GPL Ghostscript SVN PRE-RELEASE 8.56 (2006-05-20).
GS_LIB and GS_FONTPATH do not appear to contain anything.
