I've just skimmed the thread, and this sounds like a missing feature. I
think that Paul explained it correctly: lilypond acts according to the
docs, so it's not an official "bug". I know this isn't the answer that
you're looking for, but once the new bug system is running and you can
easily see all the real bugs we have, I think you'll admit that this
isn't the most important problem right now. :)
