One thing that has changed from Mac OS 10.3 to 10.4 is the
behavior of the resource forks, putting it somehow onto UNIX. But
I do not know what that mean in practice (it was briefly
mentioned in the Usenet newsgroup comp.sys.mac.system.)
I have forwarded your report to George Williams who wrote fondu. I
hope he will come up with a solution.
