The idea is to help a newbie user getting started without the need to
read documentation. For one, users expect a program they install to
appear in the menu. Also, the autopackage installation explicitely
mentions new menu entries that have become available.

The menu for lilypond opens a gui text editor with a simple piece of
lilypond music and instructions to drag and drop it onto the lilypond
icon on the desktop.

This way, a new user need not use the command line or read
documentation.

It's debatable, though.

No, but command line apps are not known for their newbie-friendliness,
and lilypond can be used with drag and drop too. I haven't figured
out how automatic processing of a .ly file works, just by clicking on
it like on Windows.

After installing my mime type file

http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/lilypond/installers/linux/autopackage/specs/lilypond/lilypond.xml?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup

nautilus-2.10 keeps craching.
