Actually, the default file extension for LaTeX files is .tex
(certainly for the same reasons that most standard packages
have names that are at most 8 letters long). If you, for example,
say 'latex myfile', it will look for myfile.tex but not for
myfile.latex. For this reason, I think it's good to keep the current
.tex suffix.
