I encountered this problem when trying to debug gdb on itself. Downloading the gdb source tree and building it with "dpkg-buildpackage -b" produced a PIE executable that I couldn't set breakpoints on properly. The Debian /usr/bin/gdb, though, is not PIE, which makes me wonder if someone (Samuel?) is compiling our Debian packages without PIE, to avoid this problem. agape brent
