That there would be some need for hooks in the existing code is clear, and this is what the "design" part would be about. It would force you to think about what extensions really make sense, and what is arbitrary non-sense. If it can't be done as a plugin, then this is a good indication that it is outside the scope of the console, and you may be better off to start from scratch, instead trying to change the console into something that it isn't.
