I can not see how this solves the problem that it is hard to write a nice parser. The suboptions-variant has the disadvantage of destroying the consistency of the user interface. A better solution might be to provide an replacement for argp in the console client that can be used by drivers, so that only once a nice parser needs to be written (though it might even be possible to use existing code from somewhere). Another solution is to use one of the commandline parser generators out there, though I do not know whether they are good enough for you/us.
