I'd suggest you start installing the Hurd-based GNU operating system and playing with it. Depending on your skills and interests you'll find different tasks on which you could help. For example, if you're interested on multi-server system core dessign, I suggest you read source code for the Hurd, Glibc, GnuMach, etc. Then find out what needs to be fixed and submit your patches to this list.
