Without spending much time on it it appears that this works.

I  haven't   tested to   confirm  whether  or   not  the  code in  the
run-daemon.c program  to open the vt  device is necessary or  not, but
just changing the  entries  in /etc/syslog.conf to point  to /dev/vt10
(in my case) works fine.

Then kill -HUP syslogd.pid.

Thanks, forgot that syslogd was working.
