Of course they should, but they should accept all reasonable values. If we would change it, we would change it from one reasonable value to another, so there should not be any problems if all Makefiles are written carefully. Eg, if they accept (MACHINE_TYPE)-(MAINE_SUBTYPE) as well as (MACHINE_TYPE), then that seems reasonable within what I know.
