It's the same in Dutch, they changed the spelling regulations to remove a lot of these things in the language some years ago (things like `c\^ontrol' -> "control" and `na\"apen' -> 'na-apen'). It's just that it isn't easy to use those diaeresis etc. with the proprietary software they have. IIRC German also changed to make it easier to write the language in ASCII. It's stupid to see that languages get changed because of broken design of software. Well, now we have unicode at least so there is still hope.
