I don't speak for the FSF, but I see a couple hurdles you'd have to overcome:

1) The Hurd maintainers would have to be willing to accept you code.
2) You'd have to convince rms that you're worth hiring.

The biggest general priority right now is probably simply getting a 0.3 
snapshot out there.  Since transparent clustering isn't in the release 
path for that, I have trouble seeing that as good criteria for paid work.

If you want to try and understand the scope of the job, I'd suggest 
starting by reading some of the code and documenting it.  The texinfo 
files are out of date, and poorly maintained and contain reference to 
historical things (like libmom) so aren't really being considered 
anymore.  If you'd like more specific documentation projects, let me know
