On 21-Jan-2010, I carried out build attempts for gzip-1.4 in about 60 environments on about 25 flavors of UNIX, but due to an unfortunate delay in checking my build reports, I did not carry out the successful installations until today, more than three months late.
Most builds were successful, but there were similar failures on several platforms that suggest an error in the test, rather than in gzip itself. Details are given below. Today, I went back on each failing platform and tried a bare-bones of the form tar xfz /tmp/gzip-1.4.tar.gz cd gzip-1.4 set path=(/usr/bin /bin) ./configure && make all check to see whether I could improve the success rate, but it did not. The FreeBSD, MirBSD, NetBSD, and Open Solaris systems were recently upgraded to their latest O/S releases, so they are effectively very new systems.
