My wife is helping to put together a new generation data archiving standard for a NASA organization, the Planetary Data System (PDS). In the past, this organization has always insisted upon raw data for their archives. The managers of the PDS may permit a single data compression tool. The front runner is gzip, given its ubiquity, unencumbered status, and likely long life. Some of her colleagues have asked whether gzip has any difficulties dealing with 64-bit data and/or with 64-bit architectures. I have told her that I am unaware of any such difficulties, but that I would inquire further.
Are there any documented gzip bugs specifically related to such data or architecture? Any documentation or links that you can provide me regarding this issue would be very helpful. I tried googling the issue but do not seem clever enough to define the search sufficiently narrowly. Thanks, Rob Rye
