The emacs-tmr package does not play the alert sound for me. Instead, I see the following error in the message buffer: Error running timer ‘tmr--complete’: (user-error "Cannot play /gnu/store/b91yva8kcx7zkdn9g1cz8n2943s0qnas-sound-theme-freedesktop-0.8/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/alarm-clock-elapsed.oga without ‘ffplay’") There is an added patch-paths phase which seems to be trying to point ffplay to an absolute path. It just doesn't seem to matter.
