So I applied Ludoâs proposed style improvement with a few more tweaks to respect the gnulib-intended shebangs, and making sure that substitute* failure on /lib/javaversion.class and the .mo test data can be recovered.
This v2 is still not a silver bullet, because gnulib users need to patch a few files before bootstrap.
