I don't think you can reliably find the version of the daemon that way. IIRC, on Debian, /etc/systemd/guix-daemon.service initially contained [Service] ExecStart=/usr/bin/guix-daemon --build-users-group=guixbuild --substitute-urls='https://ci.guix.gnu.org https://bordeaux.guix.gnu.org' However, I have changed /usr/bin/guix-daemon to /var/guix/profiles/per-user/root/current-guix/bin/guix-daemon. If you have the former, you'll need "/usr/bin/guix describe" instead of "/var/guix/profiles/per-user/root/current-guix/bin/guix describe" (the latter would probably be used by "sudo -E guix").
