That assumes XFCE is in the system profile, which is not necessarily the case when XFCE and X are started manually with startx or xinit. Instead, what do you think of introducing a $BACKGROUNDS_PATH search path, teaching XFCE to look there, and adjusting XFCE to serialize things a little differently, e.g. like <property name="last-image" type="string" value="$BACKGROUNDS_PATH/xfce/xfce-verticals.png"> ? Other desktop environments might be affected as well. Greetings, Maxime.
