It seems that there are both conventions, "with year zero" (astronomical) and "without year zero" (the more "conventional" historical usage (aka "Common Era"), see [1]. That said, these days (and ISO 8601) go by "with year zero". Therefore I'd sympathize with your tendency. Perhaps an option or a different set of functions might satisfy both camps? Definitely it needs to be documented.
