I don't think you're completely wrong, but as I recall, I recently (long after
1.23.0) changed `HU` to call `H`. It didn't used to.
But I think you're on the right track, because if that's true we'd expect `H`
itself to not work with this multi-column mode, and sure enough it doesn't.
It fails the same way.
