Follow-up Comment #4:

Hi Branden,

my $TMPDIR=exists($ENV{TMPDIR})?$ENV{TMPDIR}:'.';

This is perl's ternary operator - test ? value if true : value if false. So
$TMPDIR is set to $ENV{TMPDIR} if it exists else '.'.

$TMPDIR=$ENV{GROFF_TMPDIR} if exists($ENV{GROFF_TMPDIR});

Overwrite with $ENV{GROFF_TMPDIR} if that exists.

So, it could write to root if the environment has neither TMPDIR set and you
'cd /' before running pdfmom, but if you don't have write access to root you
will get a helpful error message from File::Temp.
