I see. I reasoned in haste, and consulted only GNU _pic_(1)'s own man page,
which doesn't summarize the grammar or document features unchanged from Eighth
Edition Unix _pic_.
Checking Kernighan's CSTR #116, sections "Positions and places",
"Expressions", and "Definitions", I see what you're getting at now.
