To flesh out the history of the text quoted in comment #15:

The "[1]" footnote reference was left dangling in the groff list message I
cited when I originally quoted this text in bug #68543.  (The cited message
did contain a footnote "[1]," but its antecedent was a different part of the
message.)  The correct "[1]" reference appeared in
http://lists.gnu.org/r/coreutils/2026-05/msg00040.html and reads in full:
