This extension has been in place at least 25 years (documented in the first
draft of the info manual, 1999) and I'd guess since groff's inception (harder
to verify). It has propagated to at least Heirloom troff and possibly other
troffs, some of which have taken cues from groff. So deprecating it affects
not just back compatibility but cross compatibility as well.
I agree that it's a useless language extension. But it enjoys a longer
history now than pre-groff troff did.
