Observable in _groff_ 1.22.4 and ever since. Likely much older.
$ /usr/bin/groff -U
.open stream thing.txt
.write stream a
.write stream b
.write stream
.write stream c
.close stream
.ex
$ cat thing.txt
a
b
.write stream c
