A) The semantics of `\-`, going back to Ossanna troff, are that it formats a
"minus sign" in the "current" font, which is usually a text font.  (But if you
`.ft S` first, yes, `\-` will get you a minus sign from the S font.)

B) The groff project doesn't have any power over what the X11 fonts look like.
 If that font unifies hyphens and minus signs, as implied by XLFD for the
Times roman font does, then they will of course look the same.

See gxditview(1), search for `TR`, then run this command.

xfd -fn '-adobe-times-medium-r-normal--*-100-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1'

Closing as invalid.
