These input lines cause chem to hang:
echo '.\" "' | chem
echo '." "' | chem
echo ' word .\" "' | chem
echo '." word "' | chem
I've discovered this when writing a troff comment. However, as you can see, it
does not matter if it's actually a comment -- there must me a period and two
quotation marks to replicate the bug.
The bug does not happen if you remove the space between the quotation marks or
put any character right in front of the second quotation mark like this:
echo '.""' | chem
echo '." word"' | chem
