I still haven't learned mom yet (I'm slowly working my way through groff's
other, formerly unmaintained macro packages), but could ".PRINTSTYLE
TYPEWRITE" interact with this issue in someway?

Let's leave this ticket open until that can be done. But if Peter feels its
severity can be kicked down to minor once appropriate warnings are in place,
that's fine with me.
