Perhaps the file "get_excel_report.py" is not a regular file, or perhaps that file is on a non-responsive network file system?
See if the following command also hangs:
$ wc -l get_excel_report.py
See what the "ls -l" and/or "stat" commands do on the same file.
Do they hang? Do they report a fifo or socket file type? Do they
also hang, perhaps on a non-responsive network file system?
