Clever!  That solved the problem elegantly, so I pushed it.  I
sympathize with Bruno's comment about the strange interface of the
RELEASE variable, but I'm pretty used to it and reworking the logic and
documentation doesn't seem motivated right now.

How about a new release of cppi?  I just packaged it for Debian, see
<https://bugs.debian.org/1075715>.
