I confirm that with MacOS X /usr/bin/sed, MODULES.html.sh spews error
messages from 'sed' (with or without Paul's patch), whereas with GNU sed,
MODULES.html.sh works fine (with or without Paul's patch).

It is not a bug in gnulib. GNU sed is listed as a dependency of gnulib in the
DEPENDENCIES file:

  * GNU sed.
    + Recommended.
      Needed on platforms where the vendor's 'sed' program is too buggy.

      http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/sed/
