There is a branch in the Automake git repo which has that. Unfortunately, my lack of time has contributed to it not being actively merged and maintained. BTW, that branch also causes Automake to fiddle with AR and related variables, and there are related Libtool changes. You might want to feed gnulib code modifying $AR "upstream". Cheers, Ralf
