It may also be a shell bug (if the shell passes wrong arguments to the child processes, or if it does not close the pipe descriptors in the parent process). Jim had another shell bug on this same OS version [1]. Also, [2] says this version of OpenSolaris is "no longer supported". Probably you should go back to OpenSolaris snv_111b.
