I struggled with the same issue a week ago, ended up replacing the "url = git:" line in the gnulib/.git/config with the "url = http://git.savannah.gnu.org/r/gnulib.git";, enabling me to pull the updates to my existing gnulib repo while behind a firewall. Jarno
