The zlib distro in ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/ghostscript/ is "zlib-1.1.3.tar.gz". This is out of date and did not build correctly when I tried it (on Mac OS X 10.4.2). I grabbed a copy of zlib-1.2.3.tar.gz and succeeded.
