[1] Correct. Sorry, I mis-typed the email. I did enter 'etags *.c' (just re-did it now to check.) I think the TAGS file is OK because I can use it 'normally' with M-. to jump to a definition.
I've also tried on a different version of emacs on a Mac. I also tried loading emacs with -Q to be sure there was no interference from other elisp files/packages. Very confusing! Pete
