No, gettext uses a traditional email-based workflow, like many other
free software projects, so you are doing it the right way.  I personally
don't think it is too much hurdle for contributing.

More importantly, we might need a copyright assignment, if the patch
contains legally significant changes:

I will let you know if the paperwork is necessary.
