1985: gcc 1986: make, gdb 1987: gawk, gas 1988: diff, grep, tar 1989: ar 1990: most common utilities (cat chmod cp dd dir du head ln ls mkdir mv rm rmdir tail) The changelogs are also interesting to see when the gnu versions of other commands appeared: 1991: test, df 1992: su, expr, echo 1994: pwd, hostname 1996: chroot, nice I am not sure for all the dates but this gives anyway a good idea of the progressive work that has been done.
